1972年2月21日，周恩来总理在人民大会堂举行盛大宴会，欢迎尼克松总统及其夫人一行。
周恩来在祝酒辞中说：“由于大家都知道的原因，两国人民之间的来往中断了20多年。现在，经过中美双方的共同努力，友好来往的大门终于打开了。目前，促使两国关系正常化，争取缓和紧张局势，已成为中美两国人民强烈的愿望。……我们相信，我们两国人民 这种共同愿望，总有一天是要实现的。”
尼克松在祝酒辞中说：“过去的一些时期我们曾是敌人。今天我们有重大分歧。使我们走到一起的，是我们有超过这些分歧的共同利益。中国人民是伟大的人民，美国人民是伟大的人民。如果我们两国人民互相为敌，那么我们共同居住的这个世界的前途就的确很暗淡。但是，如果我们能够找到进行合作的共同点，那么实现世界和平的机会就将无可估一地大大增加。”
1972年2月22日，周恩来总理同尼克松总统在北京人民大会堂举行会谈，就中美关系正常化及双方关心的其他问题进行了讨论。周恩来表示：台湾疸是阻碍两国关系正常化的关键。尼克松表示：美国承认世界上只有一个中国，台湾是中国的一部分。
On february21，1972，Premier Zhou Enlai hosted a grand banquet at the Great Hall of the People in honour of President Richard Nixon，Mrs Nixon and theirtourage.
In his toast，Zhou said：“Due to the reasons known to everybody，the exchanges between the Chinese and American peoples have ceased for more than 20 years.Now，thanks to the joint efforts by both sides，the gate is finally opened for friendly exchanges between the two peoples.It has become the strong wish of the Chinese and American people to normalize the bilateral relationship and strive for an alleviation of the tense situation…We believe，sooner or later，this common wish of our two peoples will come true.”
Nixon said his toast：“We were once enemies.Today we have major differences.What has brought us together was the common interests that transcend the differences.The Chinese people are a great people，and so are the American people.If we are hostile to each other，the future of the world which we all live in will really become dark.However，if we can find a common point for co—operation，the chance to realize world peace will be inestimably enhanced.”
